Creating perspectives – conjuring smiles: In order to give poor children in South Africa the chance of a better life beyond the slum-like townships, Commeo GmbH has now once again handed over its donation to the Friends of Wakkerstroom e.V. from Lindern in Oldenburg. The specialist for battery storage technology supports sustainable educational projects in the Cape region with a total of 2500 euros.
The money will benefit the Bonani project in Engcobo, initiated by the South African organization Hands & Feet. This means that a power generator will be purchased on site, which is intended to mitigate the consequences of not unusual power failures for the school. In addition, 40 school children will be provided with school meals, school uniforms, shoes and teaching materials such as books, notebooks and pens. Last but not least, a dance group from the school receives suitable costumes for their performances.
Schooling is compulsory in South Africa, but even poor families can only afford schooling up to the ninth grade. According to this, gifted children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds have virtually no chance of anything more than a basic education. The path to the country’s secondary high schools is therefore basically barred. As a result, there are hardly any career prospects for broad sections of the population. The unemployment rate in South Africa is currently around 35 percent – but youth unemployment is much higher.
The Wakkerstroom e.V. association wants to break the vicious circle of poverty, poor educational opportunities and poor life prospects and thus ensure better living conditions. For the third time, Commeo GmbH is supporting the work of the association with its donation. “We are very pleased about the good cooperation with Wakkerstroom,” explains Managing Director Michael Schnakenberg. “The most important feature of the association is that it only supports projects that have been personally checked and regularly evaluated on site. We can fully identify with that.”
